Doug will be showing at the Calgary Stampede Art Show again this year. He started displaying his paintings at the Stampede in 2003 so this is a 20th year anniversary for him at this high profile show. This year Doug is offering a series of large paintings centered around the landscape in his ‘Painting Alberta’ series. See you there! Check the ‘Paintings’ link for images of new work.

Come down and help Doug celebrate his 20th anniversary. His new works are a must see in person.

Doug wins a major award!

The Portrait Society of America hosted its International Members Only competition this year and they awarded Doug third place in the Wildlife category for his painting, “Early Spring”. There were over 1,100 international entries so making it to third place is one of the major highlights of Doug’s career. Thank you to the Portrait Society of America and the juror for this honour.

“Early Spring”, oil on panel, 20” x 20” - this is Doug’s winning entry into the Portrait Society of America international Members Only competition. It is a major highlight in his career.

Doug is having a solo exhibition at the Leighton Art centre!

Doug has been painting an ongoing series called ‘Painting Alberta’ for the last several years and this year he has focused solely on birds for this museum exhibition. It marks Doug’s first one-man show at the Leighton and feels like a milestone. The show opens July 31 and goes through to September 5. The setting of the Leighton centre is absolutely heavenly. The museum itself rests atop a hill overlooking miles of foothills and showcasing the rocky mountains. It’s a birding, hiking, plein air painting paradise. If you’ve not been, it’s a must-see! Hope to see you out there:-)

Doug Selected For the Cover of Canadian Cowboy Country!

Doug is very honoured to have been selected for the cover of one of his favourite magazines. This is a highlight of his career.

Doug has been fortunate to be featured in Canadian Cowboy Country several times - here are some images of those issues:

A banner year at the Calgary Stampede in 2007!

The 2008 Calgary Stampede poster painting was unveiled to great success during the 2007 Stampede in Calgary. Doug was chosen to paint the image that was used for the poster (see below) and the painting was auctioned for a record breaking $63,000. The poster is distributed worldwide and is the first of it’s kind representing Aboriginal people solely as the 2008 image of the Stampede. Doug is most honoured by the reaction to the poster by First Nations people. “I’ve devoted the heart of my painting career to portraying their culture with honour and with as much attention to detail and accuracy as I’m able, so to have the Indigenous community embrace the poster so strongly honours me in return.”

The 2008 Calgary Stampede Poster:

This poster was a forever shining moment for Doug - he grew up attending the Calgary Stampede and to be a local boy chosen as the artist to paint the image used to promote the Stampede worldwide was truly mind-blowing.
