      <image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - "Far From Home", oil, 20"x30" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is the first in my ‘Lost’ series and comes from thinking of the current epidemic of substance dependency and mental health issues in our world today - I wanted to say something about how lost we can all feel and how that is often the starting point to the road to addiction. I don’t know the answer to it all but if I cause the viewer of the painting to feel empathy for the young woman, then I’ll feel the painting is successful. And perhaps that’s a starting point…</image:caption>

<image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - 'In From the Cold", oil on board, 12"x8"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a study for a larger piece that will be a part of the ‘Lost’ series I’m working on. After a rather cool afternoon shooting in Victoria my model and I stepped into a warm pub for a bite to eat and a drink. The look of fatigue combined with relief is what caught me and led to this idea.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5db90f0e9e3d382f2f1cacd2/1574216101455-JUTMRHTVUYC21RTP9RRV/SmokeBreak.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - "Smoke Break", oil, 20"x30"</image:title>
<image:caption>Another in the ‘Lost’ series. My model Ilona, worked at the local art store I bought my supplies at and even though I found her to be a very upbeat and cheerful person, she was fantastic at giving me whatever I asked for. ‘Be sad’, I’d say and she’d give me a great sense of loss and sadness that fed the paintings. This moment came when we literally just took a break in shooting and it was better than the scene I’d been shooting so I painted this instead. It taught me to remain aware of the moments around me so I don’t miss a good story.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - 'November Sunday", oil, 30"x20"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my daughter, Shealynne, who has been a great model for me over the years. We were out on a cold day hanging around the ocean when I caught this moment. She is good at presenting emotion in a scene and I felt her loneliness in this moment even though we were chatting and giggling moments before. Good emotional models make all the difference when you are telling a story in paint.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - "At the Light's Edge", oil, 30"x24"</image:title>
<image:caption>I deliberately posed my daughter in deep shadow for this painting, because the light hitting the edge of the door was so symbolic of how we can hover between a good place in life or a very dark place. One step either way brings a profound change in our circumstances…</image:caption>

      <image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - study for "The Cellist", oil, 8"x12" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece was painted as a study for a larger piece. I had done a painting of the cellist, Britton Riley, at the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra fundraiser and wanted to gift Britton his own piece as a way of saying thanks and this was a demo I did for my painting class - this one was for me to keep as a memory of such a great experience.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - "Cellist Brittion Riley", oil, 18"x24" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the larger and final version that I painted of Britton. This was a gift to him for being so willing to model for me at the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra fundraiser.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - "The Cellist", oil, 30"x20" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece was painted live and auctioned off at a fundraiser event for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. I had the cellist, Britton Riley, actually play while I painted him in front of the crowd. I wanted him to play so his art could inform my art and make the piece stronger for that. He had a concert immediately after the event so I gave him frequent breaks so even though I had a scheduled 3.5 hours the painting was actually done in about 2.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - "Reflecting", oil, 18"x12" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>My daughter Shealynne is a great model for me. She has a terrific ability to emote through expression. This was another of those moments between scenarios I was shooting when we took a quick break and I asked her where we should head to next and I just loved the look on her face and the great reflection in the window so it became a painting.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - "At Rest", oil, 20"x16" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>This was taken down in Sedona and is a study for a larger piece I’m planning. The little shopping village of Tlaquepaque in downtown Sedona is very evocative of a Spanish/old Mexico location and my daughter Shealynne looked right at home there. We had been shopping for several hours and she literally sat for a quick rest in this shady spot. She’s never safe from becoming another painting when her old dad is around…</image:caption>

      <image:title>Contemporary Portrait/Stories - "Grandfathers' Watch", oil, 32"x12" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>My model Ilona and I were taking a lunch break in a small pub in Victoria where we’d been shooting references for my ‘Lost’ series and I loved the light limning her and bringing emphasis to her tattoo and the watch. Painting that watch was pure joy to me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Plein Air/Landscape - "The Mining Shack", oil on canvas, 8"x12"</image:title>
<image:caption>This shack is rumored to be a leftover set from the Clint Eastwood movie, Unforgiven. The movie was shot in my old stomping grounds in Drumheller, Alberta. I don’t know if this is true but I like the notion so I’m going with it. I’ve painted this little guy several times and will do so again. I love it’s mood and texture.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plein Air/Landscape - "Evening at Burrard St. Bridge", oil on board, 9" x 12"</image:title>
<image:caption>This was another piece done in an hour in the studio from a photo reference I took on Granville Island in Vancouver. I wanted to catch the very last shard of sun hitting the water before full night fell. Although I’d plein air painted on the island all day, I didn’t have anything to light my board so I couldn’t see well enough to paint this from life - even though I gave it a good try. Now I carry an LED in my kit - lesson learned.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plein Air/Landscape - "Early Spring Thaw", oil on board, 12"x8" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a piece I did in the studio because I couldn’t get this angle safely en plein air style - I had to stand on the railing of a very busy bridge (don’t tell my wife) just to get the view I most wanted so painting it from life wasn’t going to happen. I limited myself to an hour in the studio, however, just to try to keep a spontaneous feeling in the painting as though I’d painted from life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This painting is part plein air and part studio - something I don’t usually do. I like the plein air sketches to be pure and if I like them enough, expand them in the studio on a new canvas. Sometimes, though, I like it enough to want it to be a more polished painting so I touch it up in the studio. This is one of those.</image:caption>

I was driving through BC heading to a show on deadline and didn’t have time to pull over to paint plein air, so I resorted to the trusty ol’ Canon camera. So I’ve spent my share of time being the subject of this very moment this painting focuses on. Whenever I notice myself in such a moment, standing alone and drinking in Mother Nature and feeling a responsive to her and a protectiveness for her, I wonder who else was feeling 100 years ago what I was feeling in that moment. And I wonder if we were different in any way other than skin color.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is the first of my new ‘Incomplete’ series. Incomplete in the sense that I don’t worry about finishing the image to all 4 corners of the surface but also in the sense that the ideas are still forming. Our human story is still unfolding no matter what race we are. My artistic journey is included as well in the form of the brush that I painted onto the image (as a still life element). It invites the viewer to enter the image as a painting in progress - something that is still being born. It’s a symbol of effort and growth and action in life. And no, in answer to many questions, I didn’t glue a paint brush to the board. It is actually painted:-)</image:caption>

<image:title>Western - "Hustling Them Along", oil on board, 20"x20"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the second in my ‘Incomplete’ series. I really enjoy being able to leave parts of a painting in this series quite fresh and blocked in while other parts can be highly finished. In this case, the ‘still life’ elements - paint tubes and brushes - are highly detailed while the subject of the painting is just reaching a point past a block in. This allows me to more strongly convey the idea that this is a peek behind the scenes into the artist process. It invites the viewer to enter the painting more deeply.</image:caption>

<image:title>Western - study for "Scout Alone", oil on canvas, 14"x11"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the third piece in my ongoing ‘Incomplete’ series. I brought the portrait aspect of the painting to point near 2/3 complete and then fully rendered the brush. I hope to give the viewer the feeling that the artist may have just put the brush down to grab a cup of coffee before they continue working on the piece. I wanted to cause a feeling in the viewer that they could be the one to pick up the brush and continue work to pull them into the creative process more deeply.</image:caption>

<image:title>Western - "Tears for the Fallen", oil on board, 36"x24"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the fourth piece in my ongoing ‘Incomplete’ series. With this painting, I wanted to expose the various steps used to produce a painting. I’ve kept the ‘still life’ elements - the brushes, pencils, and paint tubes, which I painted as detailed as possible. But then I showed rough drawing elements as well as more detailed charcoal elements, and various degrees of completion in the paint layers. The face is finished but the surrounding areas are only suggested at. I enjoy opening up the process of art creation to a viewer actually in the painting.</image:caption>

It’s deceptively hard to paint light falling straight onto a person’s face instead of coming from an angle and creating more obvious shadows. You have to watch your values quite closely - the challenge made it pure joy to paint.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I chose to paint this young man in black and white to make it a cleaner emotional image. I wanted the viewer to really focus on his face and the emotion it carried with no busy distractions color would have added. It also allows the symbolism of the Hudson Bay colors splashed on the painting to show up more strongly. They act as foreshadowing for him that the reservation system and the ending of his life as he knows it is coming fast. I felt it important to show him in his prime and the fullness of his youthful power to make the sadness of that truth all the more powerful for the viewer.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wildlife - I Will Stand My Ground, oil on Panel, 36" x 54"</image:title>
<image:caption>I caught this bull out near the mountains at a ranch that raises Bison (I prefer Buffalo - it’s a much more fun word) - He was in range for me to get really good shots. I’ve painted them from life before but when I saw him, I knew I wanted to go with a big panel to paint him on so I relied on photo refs for the piece but when I was taking the photos, I took notes and did some quick sketching to cement in my mind things about his colouring and frame that I didn’t think the photos would convey. And I was right. Painting from life has taught me a lot about how photos distort info artists need to create realism.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wildlife - The Hunter, oil on Canvas, 30" x 30"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the first time I was lucky enough to get a good photo reference of an eagle and I literally couldn’t wait to paint it. This juvenile Bald Eagle was only 20 feet from me and showed very little concern I was there. I didn’t even know he was until I rounded the path and boom! Staring right at me. I tried to offer that feeling in this painting.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wildlife - Honey Pot, oil on Canvas, 24" x 18"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is another in my expressive colour series. I caught this bear in this quiet moment and planned to paint her but when it came time to, I couldn’t employ my usual realism - I loved the silhouette, the shape of her so much I started to paint much looser so I could emphasize the simple beauty of her form.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is one of my paintings that follow my desire to evoke mood through colour and quite evident, almost crude, brushwork. Evolving as an artist is my most sought after goal and this series of bold works helps me along that path.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wildlife - Noble, oil on Panel, 24" x 24"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a piece where I chose to focus on the silhouette and mood of this beautiful horse through colour and brushwork. The pose is so quietly noble to me but the colour and brushwork give it the immense feeling of power horses have.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wildlife - Power (a portrait of Clyde the Clydesdale), oil on Canvas, 24" x 24"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is literally a Clydesdale horse called Clyde. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him when he went by me. His sheer size was stunning. His body was like the hulks compared to a normal horse. I wanted a companion piece to Noble and so I decided to paint only his portrait but his power immensity can’t help but show through.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This mama black bear was hanging out near Waterton park years ago when I was camping there. She had two cubs with her but I liked this shot with just her. As I watched her, I could feel what it must be like to have to find food everyday. It made me thankful life gives us groceries.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is Sammy the seal who lives around Fisherman’s Wharf in Victoria, BC. When I lived there, I used to go down to feed Sammie often. Other seals came and went, of course, but old Sammie knew where the easy food was. You’re not allowed to feed them anymore and I must say I miss that.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wildlife - Study for "Sammie the Seal", oil on board, 11"x14"</image:title>
<image:caption>I wanted to try this piece because I had no idea at all how I would try to show Sammie floating just under the water with no real evidence of water - in the sense of obvious waves or ripples. It was really smooth water with just a hint of sun ripples under the surface. Challenges like this are what keep painting so invigorating.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a big bull that I saw touring around Waterton National park years ago. There was a whole herd that lived down there. You could tour their paddock in your car as long as you didn’t drive fast or get out of your car. It was an amazing experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Beacon Hill is an amazing park right in the heart of Victoria, BC. I lived a block away from there for about 7 years and loved gathering painting references there. There is an abundance of ponds, a big forest, and even a grand old english style bridge - great painting to be had!</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a painting I did to commemorate a really cool weekend hiking and camping in Waterton park a number of years ago. I’ve done a few studies of this bear to prep myself for a much larger painting of her and her two cubs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>There’s an old barn near the Springbank airport in my home city of Calgary that I like to photograph and plein air paint. This window is from that location. I added the magpie but it was from that area so I could well imagine this actually happening. I got dive bombed repeatedly by a hawk last time I went there so I’m pretty cautious going there these days.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wildlife - "The Messenger", oil on canvas, 48"x72"</image:title>
<image:caption>This idea came to me when I was visiting a herd of Buffalo near Longview, Alberta. There were crows actually popping along the backs of these Bison (yes, I know they’re called Bison - I just prefer Buffalo :-). One in particular made me think the bird was trying to kick start him - it kept bouncing on him like it was saying ‘let’s go, pal!’. When I see something that cool, I feel an immediate need to paint it. I may never see something like that again and painting it lets me live it more deeply.</image:caption>

The flipped perspective, with a successful business man in the foreground resting on the strength that his history offers him (represented by the abstract teepees in back) tells the progression of the story that the first piece started. <image:caption>This is a study sketch for a painting idea. I often start an idea this way. I like to see the emotional value without colour which can sometimes be a crutch. If I can feel the emotion in black and white, I know the idea is strong.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This was a study in subtle values. The main part of his face and therefore his full expression is in dark shadow. I didn’t want to lighten the shadow much because I liked the drama, but it is so dark the features had to be created with very little variation. It was really hard but very instructional and quite rewarding.</image:caption>

But I thought I could try to go for detail just to see and was very surprised by how fine the lines could actually be. This drawing set me on a whole new charcoal path.</image:caption>

The Apache were also the last Indigenous people to surrender to US rule and submit to the reservation system. Before that time, they often sported trophies from fallen foes to cause their enemies great intimidation - which was very effective.</image:caption>

A little more formal but still not pushing a lot of information. It’s basically just a way to see the initial idea more fully to see if I like it enough to pursue it in a painting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This was going to be a full sheet charcoal with full value and tons of detail. Yet, when I stood back to look at it at this stage, I just liked it like this too much to do more. So I stopped. Some people would be unsatisfied with this, wanting a stronger resolution and I was among that group too so I did it again as I’d originally intended on a new sheet. I must say, this is still my favorite. Art is like that - there’s no rhyme or reason, you just like what you like.</image:caption>

A birding app describes the American Coot as a ‘chicken like bird that acts like a duck’ - that description captures it beautifully because, for me; this is a very comical bird. He moves oddly in the water like he doesn’t quite know what to do with himself. Great fun to paint.</image:caption>

They were loud and some of them were fighting for space along a particular window sill - hence the title of this painting.</image:caption>

Covid and the lockdown felt very far away because of it. This magpie was actually yakking at a couple of mallards floating along the stream. He kept hopping closer the waters edge - it seemed like he wanted friends, but the second he caught sight of himself in the water, he forgot all about the ducks. It struck me as very funny and very paintable.</image:caption>

I’ve seen pretty cool and rare birds at that lake but the yellow headed Blackbird is still amongst my favourites. This young man was searching for worms and grubs in the grass. I was awestruck when I saw him find a grub nest - for such a little bird, he was incredibly powerful. He dug up clouts of dirt and sent it flying for several feet behind him until he got his prize. This goose was floating along the pond looking for it’s mate - who was resting (or perhaps nesting) on a little island. It just made such a great idea for a painting. I love the richness that colours have when the air is humid and overcast. In 2022, this painting took 3rd place in the international Members Only competition under the Portrait Society of America Wildlife category. This marks a major highlight in Doug’s career.</image:caption>

He waited for me while I was in the coffee shop (I could see him watching me through the window) and he followed me down to the river. I spent about 15 minutes chatting to him about how sorry I was I couldn’t feed him - I didn’t know what was safe for him to eat. He finally left and seemed a little huffy about it.</image:caption>

Kind of like you’re staring at a carved dummy that’s been garishly painted instead of a real creature. You can’t help feel like it’s not possible what you’re looking at. And those red eyes look crazy and otherworldly to me. Of course, all of that just makes for a brilliantly fun bird to paint…</image:caption>

Partly because it was a huge risk - showing the stark beauty of bare winter hills isn’t for everyone, so you worry that it will have appeal for anyone - but also because it was a brutal challenge. <image:caption>This is my favourite time to view the mountain range known as the 3 sisters in Canmore, Alberta. I’ve long wanted to paint a scene of these mountains with the last little caress of the sun hitting the sides of the mountains. I’ve watched this moment happen many times in my life and just decided it was time to try to capture it in paint.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I was hiking along the lower range of Mount Yamnuska near Banff and Canmore in my home of Alberta last fall. I’m almost embarrassed to say that out of all the time I’ve spent hiking the mountains around Calgary, I’d never hiked Mt. Yamnuska before. I’ve discovered this is yet another ‘must paint’ area for me. This painting is the start of my trying to do just that.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a peak west of Vermillion Lakes in Banff, Alberta. I’m always caught by the incredibly fleeting beauty of the last minutes of sun set in the mountains. It provides a huge challenge artistically because all the values and colours are so close together you really have to be on your game to make the painting convincing on any level. Scary but well worth trying to do.</image:caption>

<image:title>Painting Alberta series - Flying Home - The Return of Summer, oil on canvas, 24"x36"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is an actual moment I witnessed while out plein air painting. And I was lucky enough to get my camera out quickly enough to capture it so I could try to paint it in the studio. I love Alberta’s mountains, but I equally love the prairies and this history they have. All the old homesteads, tractors, etc are like sculptures to me and the geese flying overhead was just a rush and a huge boost to the storytelling and composition of this piece.</image:caption>

<image:title>Painting Alberta series - Vermillion Lakes and Mt. Rundle, oil on panel, 24"x36" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a slightly different take on Mount Rundle in Banff National Park - it is truly iconic but is usually painted from a vantage point near the base of Vermillion Lakes. I wanted to gain more of a bird’s eye view of the scene for this painting. It involved 3 hours of aggressive and very steep hiking to attain the viewpoint I was after. I think it was worth it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Painting Alberta series - Diamonds on the River, oil on panel, 24" x 36" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>This is near ForgetMeNot Pond in the Kananaskis mountain range about an hour west of Calgary, AB. The goal was to capture the feeling of sitting at the edge of a river on a beautiful summers day without a care in the world. Just taking it all in. So I painted the image from a ‘worm’s eye view’ to help along the feeling that the viewer was perched on a rock right at the river’s edge.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Painting Alberta series - Summer Flowers, oil on panel, 16" x 16" - SOLD</image:title>
<image:caption>I took part in a Plein Air paint out last summer and as I was leaving the town of Rosebud, AB (the location of the event) I saw this scene by the side of the road and had to give it a try. I’ve never painted flowers before and didn’t have anything to plein air paint the scene with having just used all of my panels during the event, so I took a series of photos, wrote down some colour notes and then painted this in the studio. I prefer painting from life, but this scene came back to me in all its glory even though I painted it in deep winter in my basement studio.</image:caption>

<image:title>Painting Alberta series - study for The Evening Light, oil on canvas, 14" x 14"</image:title>
<image:caption>This was a quick study done in studio. I caught the scene driving home from a frigid plein air painting session in the mountains during winter and didn’t have time or thawed fingers to paint this from life. So the idea was to prove to myself I could capture the elements of the scene - the cool evening weather amidst the warmth of sunset (and the tiny kitchen light) - as convincingly in studio as it would have been painting it from life outside.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Two Jack Lake is near Banff, AB and close to Lake Minniwanka. It is a magnificent spot in the heart of the Rockies and begs to be painted everytime I see it. This little island dotted with pine trees often ends up being my focus. It just makes me feel good looking at it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Painting Alberta series - study for Lake Louise, oil on panel, 16" x 12"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a study - studies take various shapes for me - some are for trying something I’ve never painted, some are for understanding the values and temperatures of colours before I go to a bigger painting, and still others are an exercise in staying loose and spontaneous with brush work and applying the paint. This was all of them rolled into one.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Painting Alberta series - Lake Louise, oil on panel, 20" x 30"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a larger painting built on the previous study. I’m working up to a very large piece - 3’x4’ - so this is still kind of a study. There’s such a deep and spiritual mood to Lake Louise that I think it needs more exploration before I attempt the final piece.</image:caption>
